February Eco-Challenge: Take stock of the year ahead – help the planet by the way you exercise and holiday
Gosh, we are a month into the new year – a time when we noticethe lighter evenings, and perhaps lament that we have already managed to give up on our new year resolutions!
Well, there is still chance to make amends… Green Christian has provided a few ideas that we can start during February:
• Cancel the gym membership! Cardio ‘car-ban’. Do you use a car to drive to the gym? You’re not alone, but perhaps there are ways to exercise without getting in your car and still stay fit. You could cycle some of the many cycle paths and routes that have opened recently in Cardiff, or try dancing to the radio, or exercising to a YouTube video in the privacy of your living room. Green Christian website points out that walking costs
just 2p per mile in boot leather!
• Pile on the pulses instead of the pounds. Food for thought. Lentils, chickpeas or beans are naturally low in fat and high in fibre and minerals. Add some rice, couscous or pasta, and you have a complete protein meal at a fraction of the price of meat. Pulses are also kind on the environment and tasty too.
• Insulate yourself! Layer logic. Find warm, fluffy jumpers and fleecy blankets in second-hand charity shops and cocoon yourself in layers to beat the cold.
• Stay grounded. Travel wisely. Around now, our thoughts often turn to summer holidays. By not flying to this year’s destination, you will save a hefty chunk of your carbon footprint and be able to relax knowing that you are helping the planet. You can even pledge to avoid flying. • Attend the Synod’s Eco-Roadshow at City URC on Saturday 8 February.
